Reminder: Town hall Wednesday to discuss university finances

June 9, 2020

Dear Johns Hopkins Community:

Our planning process for a phased resumption of on-site activities is progressing steadily with recent opportunities for our community to discuss research, campus operations, and planning for fall instruction. Alongside this work, we know there continue to be questions and concerns about the financial picture ahead for Johns Hopkins University. We wish to remind you of the virtual town hall discussion at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10 to learn more about our budgetary decisions.

Along with Helene Grady, vice president for planning and budget, we will provide a brief overview of the university’s budget model and review the projected economic impact of the pandemic on university finances. We will talk about how we plan to maintain a strong foundation that will allow us to focus on our core academic mission in these challenging times.

In addition, several of our colleagues will join us to answer questions from participants: Cherita Hobbs, executive director, employee and labor relations; Jon Links, professor, vice provost, and chief risk and compliance officer; Meredith Stewart, executive director, Total Rewards; and Alicia Wilson, vice president for economic development. Stephen Gange, professor and executive vice provost for academic affairs, will moderate questions submitted by participants either in advance at covidtownhall@jhu.edu or during the event.

This is the latest in a series of virtual town halls to elaborate on our planning efforts and take questions from the Johns Hopkins community. Previous town halls have been archived for asynchronous viewing. Another one, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 12, will focus on screening, testing, and tracing to support the health of affiliates during the first phase of reopening. It will be accessible at the same JHU Planning Town Hall webpage.

Thank you for your continued participation in these important discussions.

Sincerely,

Sunil Kumar
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Daniel Ennis
Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration
