Refund for JHU employees' monthly parking fees

June 30, 2020

Dear Colleagues:

Over the past few months, COVID-19 has forced us to alter nearly every employee’s work activities or location in order to protect our community’s health. Amid this disruption, we have been thinking through how best to support those employees who pay for monthly parking at university locations while they have been asked to work from home.

In response, we are refunding monthly payments to all employees who paid for university parking for the months of April, May, and June, and we will not charge monthly parking fees for July. This will apply to individuals who worked at home and those who were asked to fill essential positions on campus during that time.

You do not have to do anything to receive this refund if you are part of the university payroll-deduction parking program. The refund will appear in your mid-July paycheck. For those employees who paid with pre-tax deductions, under applicable tax guidance the refund is required to be treated as wages or taxable income, so you will see that adjustment on your pay stub.

Please note that monthly parking fees will resume in August. If you wish to cancel your parking because you expect to continue working off-site, or for any other reason, you will need to use the online form to make that request. You can make this change at any time, but in order to avoid paying for August, you will need to cancel by July 15. You will be able to restart parking at any time using the current parking sign-up process for your location, which may require pre-payment.

Additional information is on the HR website coronavirus information page under the Parking Refunds header.

We appreciate your patience as our institution has tackled a huge number of operational issues that have arisen from the COVID-19 pandemic. Parking fees are tied to several issues related to ownership and financing of the parking structures, and we needed some time to evaluate the situation and finalize an equitable solution.

Thank you for your incredible effort in this new environment as we all work to support our mission of academic excellence.
